ACHIEVEMENTS IN CARDIAC SURGERY
  •  
1963 - awarded the Institute’s Gold Medical for the Best Undergraduate by the India’s first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
  •  
1967 - Master of Surgery (MS) awarded with Gold Medical for the Merit of First Order winning felicitation by the then President of India Dr. Zakir Hussain. In April 1968 he took up his further training in the field of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
  •  
1971 - Completed his degree of M.Ch. (CTVS) with honours and joined the Faculty of All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
  •  
1972 to 1974 he had received advanced training at the world renowned Texas Heart Institute under Dr. Denton A. Cooley and the Children’s Hospital at Buffalo NY, USA under Dr. S. Subramanian in the field of Open Heart Surgery of adult and pediatric heart disease.

1974 - Established the open heart surgery program at All India Institute of Medical Sciences under the stewardship of Prof. N. Gopinath and later assisted in the establishment of Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre at AIIMS
  •  
February, 1982 - Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.

1992 - Became the Chief of the Cardio Thoracic Sciences Centre.

June 30, 2003 - appointed as Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

August 3, 1994 - Pioneered the First Heart Transplantation in India thereby putting India on the International map of heart transplantation. This remarkable feat had brought laurels to the Medical Community in particular and to our country in general. He has been able to establish a well coordinated heart transplant program in the country at AIIMS and performed TWENTY SIX (26) successful cardiac transplantations, 50,000 open heart surgeries and trained 120 cardiac surgery residents. He introduced, for the first time in Asia, the implantation of Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) as a bridge to transplant and successfully performed the heart transplantation on these patients who was on Left Ventricular Assist Device for more than 90 days.

Successfully pioneered the use of Autologous Stem Cells implantation for the repair of the myocardium as an alternative to the transplantation. He has also implanted the stem cells into the pancreas for curing the type II diabetes.

The sitting Lok Sabha held on 4th August, 1995, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Leader of Opposition, Shri Gulam Nabi Azad, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourist, Shri Somnath Chatterjee, MP and the Speaker Lok Sabha, on behalf of the house congratulated Prof. P. Venugopal for the achievement in successfully performing the first heart transplantation in India.

Shri Gulam Nabi Azad, the then Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, India vide his letter dated 23rd August, 1995 felicitated Prof. P. Venugopal on having successfully performed heart transplantation in All India Institute of Medical Sciences and has been provided the facility of free air travel for journeys within India and abroad in connection with carrying out further research in the field of heart transplantation and related subject.

The Delhi Assembly passed a resolution in connection with heart transplantation performed by Prof. P. Venugopal. The House commends the dedication, outstanding and hard-work undertaken by Prof. P. Venugopal for the heart transplant surgery is praised by every citizen of our country. Prof. P. Venugopal could make huge money in some foreign developed country but he preferred to serve his own countrymen.

Awarded prestigious “PADMA BHUSHAN” by the Hon’ble President of India, Shri K.R. Narayanan on the occasion of the 49th Republic Day of India i.e. 26th January, 1998.

Awarded the prestigious “DR. B.C. ROY AWARD” by the Indian Medical Association for the year 1997-98 as an Eminent Medical Person.

Headed units that have done over 50,000 cardiac operations including 33,000 coronary bypass operations of which 16,000 have been “Off-Pump” procedures.

Have covered the entire field of adult and pediatric heart operations including three heart transplantations.

The first heart transplant was done by me in December 1996 and this patient lived for 14 years and led a very useful life and was able to settle his family. The third patient was operated upon 8 years ago and lives in Kolkatta.

Congenital Heart Surgery: Regularly performing wide Congenital Heart surgeries, I have performed arterial switch surgeries, TAPVC, shunts etc in neonates. Other surgeries like TOF,Fontan’s surgery etc ASCAPA: i.e. anomalous single coronary artery from the pulmonary artery in 3 month old child was successfully performed by me (on operation table diagnosis) at our centre. This is world’s fifth and Asia’s first successfully operated case in this condition.

Heart Failure: Our unit has performed the Maximum number of cardiac transplants in a short span of 6 months with excellent result.

Manage acute cardiac failure by putting patients on ECHMO, post cardiogenic shock (post coronary stenting),Viral Myocarditis, Drug induced Myocarditis, post cardiac surgery etc.

Attended the First Cardio Pulmonary Transplants hands-on workshop conducted by Dr Stephen C Clark (Freeman Hospital New Castle) in 2015.

On nomination from the Honorable Governor of Karnataka, served as a Member in the Senate of the Health University of Karnataka (Two terms-6 years), which is responsible for setting and regulating standards of Health care education in the state.

Responsibility of rejuvenating HELINET, e-library of RGUHS as the Chairman of the review committee with a budget of Rupees 10 crores which caters to 50 Medical colleges, 40 dental colleges and 800 other paramedical colleges listed under RGUHS.

A sizeable proportion of the surgeries that I do are on patients who come under government insurance schemes for the underprivileged like Suvarana Arogya Chaithanya (for school children), Vajpayee Arogya Shree (for Below Poverty Line card holders) & Yeshasvini (for farmers) health schemes.
